Giamatti began to earn critical acclaim after his lead role in the 2003 film ''American Splendor''. He gained mainstream recognition and fame with the 2004 independent romantic comedy ''Sideways''. His portrayal of a depressed writer vacationing in the Santa Barbara wine country garnered him a Golden Globe nomination and an Independent Spirit Award. Following the commercial success of Sideways, Giamatti appeared in ''Cinderella Man'', for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture.
In 2006, he was the lead in M. Night Shyamalan's ''Lady in the Water'', a supernatural thriller, followed by the animated film ''The Ant Bully'', and Neil Burger's drama ''The Illusionist'' co-starring Edward Norton. He also played Mr. Hertz in the action movie ''Shoot 'Em Up'' and Santa Claus in the comedy ''Fred Claus''. In 2008, he received his first Emmy Award for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie" for his title performance in the HBO miniseries ''John Adams'', a role that also led to a Screen Actors Guild award. That same year, he starred in the independent film ''Pretty Bird'' which is a fictionalized retelling about the drama behind the invention of a rocketbelt.
He was nominated for 45 separate awards between 2001 and 2008, and won 26 of them, including both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for ''John Adams''. All of his nominations except one were for ''American Splendor'', ''Sideways'', ''Cinderella Man'', or ''John Adams''; the exception was a Blockbuster Entertainment Award nomination for ''Big Momma's House''. In 2011 he won a second Golden globe for his portrayal of the titular character in the Canadian film ''Barney's Version''. The Brooklyn Academy of Music asked Giamatti, its "2007 BAM Cinema Club Chair", to pick films for an eight-movie series called "Paul Giamatti Selects" and shown at the Academy in August and September 2007. His selections indicated a taste for paranoia and "the darkest of dark comedy," according to a writer for ''The New York Times'', and included ''Frenzy'', ''Dr. Strangelove'', ''Brewster McCloud'', ''The Big Clock'', ''The Seventh Victim'', ''Dawn of the Dead'' (1978 version), ''Seconds'', and ''Invasion of the Body Snatchers'' (1978 version).
Giamatti will play noted science fiction author Philip K. Dick in the semi-biopic ''The Owl in Daylight'', which he is producing through his production company, Touchy Feely Productions. He is set for the lead role as Colonel Tom Parker in ''Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires'', which co-stars Ron Perlman, who recently replaced Bruce Campbell.

On 12 March 2007, Driver made her return to television starring alongside Eddie Izzard on the FX Network show ''The Riches'', a series about a family of Travellers living in an upscale gated community in the suburbs. She was nominated for an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award as Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Driver guest-starred in the January 2010 episode of ''Modern Family'' entitled "Moon Landing". Her role was that of Claire's friend and former co-worker whom she hasn't seen in years. She also starred alongside James Nesbitt and Goran Visnjic in the British series ''The Deep'', which was shown on BBC One over the summer of 2010.
In 2010, Driver appeared in ''Conviction'', a film depicting the real-life story of Betty Ann Waters (Hilary Swank), a single mother who spends a decade pursuing a law degree so she can represent her wrongfully convicted brother (played by Sam Rockwell) at court. Driver plays a fellow law student and friend of Swank's character who helps her with the case. The film received generally positive reviews according to the review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes listing an average score of 6.3/10 and a 68% of approval from critics. Also in 2010, Driver starred alongside Paul Giamatti in the comedy-drama ''Barney's Version''. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film received an 80% of positive reviews from critics and Driver herself went on to win a Genie Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 2011, Driver will be appearing alongside Vera Farmiga, David Duchovny, Will Arnett and Keri Russell in the comedy ''Goats'' as well as in the 1970s-set drama ''Hunky Dory'', directed by Marc Evans.
She began a low-profile return to music in 2000; the following year, she signed with EMI and Rounder Records and performed at SXSW. Canadian music producer Colin Craig assisted in the eventual release of ''Everything I've Got in My Pocket'', which reached No. 34 in the UK, and a second single, "Invisible Girl" peaking at No. 68. The album was backed by a group including members of the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn's band. Driver wrote 10 of the 11 songs on the album and also covered "Hungry Heart" from Bruce Springsteen's ''The River''. In 2004, Driver was the support act for the Finn Brothers on the UK portion of their world tour.
In 2004, Driver played Carlotta Giudicelli in Joel Schumacher's film of ''The Phantom of the Opera''. Because of the vocal requirements of the role, Driver was the sole cast member to have her voice dubbed. However, she did lend her own voice to ''Learn to be Lonely'', a song written by Andrew Lloyd Webber specifically for the film version of his musical (it plays over the closing credits of the movie). Driver released her second album entitled ''Seastories'' on 17 July 2007. The 12-track set is produced by Marc "Doc" Dauer, who also produced ''Everything I've Got in My Pocket''. Ryan Adams and his band The Cardinals and Liz Phair are among the list of collaborators for the album.

Scott Speedman (born September 1, 1975) is a British-born Canadian film and television actor. He is best known for playing Ben Covington in the coming-of-age drama television series ''Felicity'' and Lycan-Vampire hybrid Michael Corvin in the gothic horror/action ''Underworld'' films.
Speedman's television debut came in 1995 on the Canadian series ''Net Worth''. After appearing in several small television roles, Speedman decided to go to New York to study for a short time at the Neighborhood Playhouse before dropping out and returning home to Toronto.
His big break came when he got a call from a casting agent in the United States that wanted him to audition for a new television series called ''Felicity''. Portraying brooding college student Ben Covington opposite overnight star Keri Russell as Felicity, Speedman received much acclaim on the popular series. Soon after ''Felicity'', Speedman began to get offers for more prominent roles while working on the series. In 2000, Speedman landed the role of Billy Hannan opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in the film ''Duets''.
After ending a four-year run on ''Felicity'', Speedman quickly found success on the big screen. In 2003 he landed a role opposite Kurt Russell in the critically acclaimed cop-drama ''Dark Blue'', portraying an inexperienced L.A.P.D. detective caught in a web of corruption. Next, Speedman portrayed the husband of a terminally ill woman opposite fellow Canadian and high-school alum Sarah Polley in the critically acclaimed independent drama ''My Life Without Me''. Speedman won a "Golden Wave Award" for his work on the film.
Landing his first major starring role in a feature that same year, Speedman appeared opposite Kate Beckinsale in the supernatural thriller ''Underworld''. Making an impression on audiences in the stylized vampire-werewolf pic, Speedman was honored with a Saturn Award in the category "Cinescape Face of the Future Award". Then, he went on to star alongside James Marsden in the thriller ''The 24th Day'' and opposite Ice Cube in ''XXX: State of the Union''. Upon the success of the first Underwold film, Speedman reprised his role as Michael Corvin in the 2006 sequel ''Underworld: Evolution''.
Speedman appeared with Liv Tyler in the 2008 horror–thriller ''The Strangers'', and also alongside Rachel Blanchard in ''Adoration'', directed by Atom Egoyan.
In July 2009, it was reported that Speedman will star alongside Dustin Hoffman among others in the film adaption of ''Barney's Version''. Pre-production began in August 2009, and filming took place in Rome, New York and Canada. Speedman also starred in the independent Western ''The Last Rites of Ransom Pride'' alongside Lizzy Caplan and Dwight Yoakum.

Volunteer Martin Savage (1898 – 19 December 1919) was an Officer in the Dublin Brigade of the Irish Republican Army, from Ballisodare, County Sligo. On 19 December 1919 he was killed during a gun battle after an ambush at Ashtown, near the border of County Meath and County Dublin, during the early stages of the Irish War of Independence.
It was not originally planned that Savage was to take an active part in the ambush, however, after a chance meeting with Breen and Hogan, Savage insisted that he join the party. Sean Hogan initially attempted to dissuade the eager young volunteer, but eventually he relented and gave Savage an automatic pistol. The Volunteers' intelligence operative had informed the unit that Lord French would be travelling in the second car of the armed convoy that comprised an outrider and three following cars which would bring Lord French from Ashtown railway station to the Vice-Regal Lodge in Phoenix Park, Dublin.
The plan was for Martin Savage, Tom Kehoe and Dan Breen to push a hay-cart halfway across the road and then, after the out-rider and the first car had passed, they would push it the rest of the way across the road, thereby completely blocking the path of the remaining vehicles. They had been informed that Lord French was to be in the second car and this car would be attacked with grenades, Mills Bombs and concentrated rifle fire.
As they pushed the hay-cart across the road their plan was almost foiled as a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) disturbed them, telling them to move on. One of Volunteers lobbed a grenade at him, although it didn't explode it struck the police officer on the head, knocking him unconscious. The police officer was then dragged from the road and the attack went ahead as planned.
In the crossfire Dan Breen was shot in the leg and seconds later Savage fell mortally wounded after being hit by a bullet in the neck. He died in the arms of Dan Breen and his last words to Breen were "I'm done, but carry on....". Tom Kehoe and the wounded Dan Breen succeeded in carrying Martin Savage's body from the road and back to Kelly’s Pub while the gunfight continued.
Two RIC men and a driver were also wounded in the gun battle. At this point the British military, including some wounded, began to withdraw from the scene and continued on towards the Phoenix Park. Knowing British reinforcements would be on their way, the IRA unit then dispersed to safe houses in the Dublin area. Dan Breen was helped onto his bike by Paddy Daly who helped him to a safehouse in the Phibsboro' area, where he was attended to by the captain of the Dublin hurling team, Dr J.M. Ryan.
The next morning, the ''Irish Independent'' published an article which described the attackers as "assassins" and included other such terms as "criminal folly", "outrage" and "murder." Taking these terms as an insult to their dead comrade, it was decided to attack the paper. On Sunday, at 9pm, between twenty and thirty Volunteers under Peadar Clancy entered the offices of the ''Independent''. They informed the editor of their intentions and began to dismantle and smash the machinery. Despite this action, with the assistance of the other Dublin papers, the ''Independent'' was able to appear the next day, and the owners were awarded £16,000 pounds in compensation. According to Breen, neither the ''Independent'', nor any other Dublin paper, referred to the IRA as murderers or assassins again.
After the inquest, Savage's body was handed over to his relatives. His remains lay overnight at Broadstone Station before departing for Sligo where it was met at Collooney railway station by a large crowd. His coffin, draped in an Irish Tricolour, was carried over two miles at shoulder height to his family's burial ground. Savage was buried with full military honours in his native Ballisodare, County Sligo. Dan Breen noted that "the cortege was several miles long, the Parish Priest attended and recited the last prayer, while the RIC, with a chivalry characteristic of them, surrounded the graveyard with guns and bayonets. However, I suppose, this was the best tribute they could have paid to a gallant soldier, even though they did not mean it that way".
In 1948, the National Graves Association erected a memorial to Savage close to the site of the ambush at Ashtown Cross. There is an annual commemoration of his death at the site of the ambush.
There have also been a number of streets and public places named after the Volunteer including Martin Savage Place in County Meath, Martin Savage Road and the home of Kinvara Ards, Martin Savage Park in County Dublin and Martin Savage Terrace near the centre of Sligo Town.
Since 2002, the Dublin West Volunteer Joe McDonnell Sinn Féin Cumann hold an annual rally in in honour of Martin Savage on the anniversary of his death. These have been held in Castleknock and Blanchardstown, near Ashtown where he was killed.
Over 200 Republicans gathered in Castleknock Village on Saturday 12 December for a commemoration to mark the 90th anniversary of Martin's death. Relatives of the dead Volunteer – Mick and Rita Savage travelled from Ballisodare in Co. Sligo to join proceedings. The crowd – led by the Carrick-on-Suir Republican Flute Band, then marched to the commemorative stone at the Halfway House roundabout where they were addressed by Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald.
In her address, McDonald told those assembled that it was ironic that at the end of this difficult year, the country's banks, clerics and the government had all been discredited. It has become clear that the government are protecting the best interests of a few in society and were attacking the most vulnerable with its recent budget. She referred to the ultimate sacrifice made by Martin Savage 90 years ago and urged those present to get involved in Republican politics to counter the measures taken the Fianna Fáil/Green Party coalition during the week.Paul Donnelly, who chaired proceedings, called on Rita Savage to lay a wreath on behalf of the Savage family, and Castleknock Sinn Féin representative Charlie Maples laid a wreath on behalf of the republican movement.
The Carrick-on-Suir Republican Flute Band then closed proceedings by playing Amhrán na bhFiann. The Coen/Savage (East Sligo) Sinn Féin Cumann also hold a commemoration every Easter Sunday morning at Martin Savage's graveside in Ballisodare, Co. Sligo.
